The NY Clown Theatre Festival is New York's preeminent annual, international Clown Theater festival since its inception in 2006.

The Brick Theater, Inc., presenter of the first festival of Clown Theatre in New York in over 20 years in 2006, brings the festival back this fall as the 2010 New York Clown Theatre Festival, performing September 3-26 at The Brick Theater in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This year’s festival will feature diverse clown theatre artists from Wales, Mexico, Canada, and across the United States from California, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Oregon, Chicago and New York City.

The festival will present 17 mainstage shows, 3 family shows, 1 street show, and 5 cabarets, including a cabaret devoted to clowns over 50! The festival begins on September 3 with its traditional opening day parade from Union Square through the L line subway to Williamsburg, followed by an open-to-the-public pie fight at The Brick Theater! And it closes on September 26 with the traditional closing day Funeral, with clowns weeping and wailing in the streets of Williamsburg.

The NEW YORK CLOWN THEATRE FESTIVAL will run September 3-26 at The Brick (575 Metropolitan Avenue between Union Avenue and Lorimer Street, Brooklyn; subway - L to Lorimer, G to Metropolitan). Tickets (Regular $15 / $10 for Weekend Matinee Family Shows) available online at the "Buy Tickets" links below or by calling 1-866-811-4111.

In a world where television has been abandoned, one lone television is found. One channel remains working. Channel One. A few lost souls are still out there, creating their own brand of quality entertainment. They’re just not sure anyone’s listening, or watching, or even has the capability to watch on a TV, ’cause these gems don’t play on a computer. It’s TV, baby.  TV.  And they’re the only ones left. 60 min.

[Double-bill with Diz and Izzy Aster, Ferdinand the Magnificent! or Send in the Angels]
Carmen Francesca Maria Frida Ophelia de la Rosa is ridiculously vain.  Gertrude is ridiculously desperate to be just as pretty! Two female clowns attempt to do an extraordinary act together, but will their competitive vying for audience adoration spin it into an outrageous flop?  Their impassioned desire to be the best, the most bewitching, the most ravishing, the most fascinatingly foxy, the most devastatingly dazzlingly divine diva drives their female rivalry to shocking extremes.  This battle of beauty is fully equipped with unraveling skirts, increasingly absurd hairdos and (laughable?) female-vs-female zaniness!  25 min.

The world of the theatre clown is generated from the empty space of the stage.  The clown brings the space alive in a dynamic partnership with the audience.  “To be caught,” to be captured by what IS, is the goal of our play.  We will play with presence, breath, voice, movement, status, and delight in the playing.  On the second day we will investigate the situation of the clowns” journey to set us on the road to laughter.  By working in ensemble, we learn who our clown is in relation to community.  Joan Schirle is the director of the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre and will offer the teaching  of DAI based in founder Carlo Mazzone-Clementi’s principles of Effort, Risk, Momentum, Joy.™

JOAN SCHIRLE’s high school years were spent watching The Three Stooges and I Love Lucy.  Nevertheless, she became Founding Artistic Director  of  Dell’Arte International, the ensemble acclaimed for  33 years of collaborative creation and global touring, and the Director of Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre (one year training program plus  MFA in Ensemble Based Physical Theatre).  She designed DAI’s MFA curriculum and heads DAI’s Study Abroad: Bali Program.  Her solo show, Second Skin, has been seen in five countries.  She was honored at the 16th Cairo International Experimental Theatre Festival as a leader in the field of experimental theatre.  She was one of six US actors awarded a 2006 Fox Foundation National Artists Residency grant.  She has directed at San Diego Rep, Houston’s Alley Theatre, Bloomsburg Ensemble, and A Traveling Jewish Theatre.  Her teaching includes mask performance, commedia dell’arte, clown theatre, physical comedy, sound and movement.

PHYSICAL COMEDY

A hands-on crash course in physical comedy vocabulary for clowns, mimes, actors, and everyone in between. Technique leads to application in short pieces, with an emphasis on character interaction, gag structure, and storytelling. Skills are centered around working with your partner (counterweights, levers, mounts, lifts, partner tumbling) and with the physical world around you (tables, chairs, doors, props, etc.). Some performance experience and a reasonably sound body highly recommended, but all levels of experience welcome.

JOHN TOWSEN has taught full-length physical comedy courses at Princeton University, Ohio University, and the Juilliard School (the latter two for six years each), plus numerous shorter workshops, most recently at the Nouveau Clown Institute in Barcelona.  He has many famous former students but doubts he had anything to do with their success.  His once-upon-a-time performance career included 7 years of television acting as a child growing up in New York and a decade of clowning as an adult, from the elementary schools of Long Island to the sands of Saudi Arabia, most of it with partner Fred Yockers.  In his other lives he teaches multimedia and digital video in the Creative Arts & Technology program at Bloomfield College, and spends his summers working for the Open Society Institute doing media training for activists in hot spots across the globe.  He is the author of Clowns (1976) and was artistic director for the first two New York international clown theatre festivals (1983, 1985).  His latest research on physical comedy is to be found on his blog: physicalcomedy.blogspot.com
