The mortal fear must be running high in the veins… Two men—two rivals—who, after holding out for years, finally come to a now abandoned boxing ring that their fathers, and their fathers’ fathers, and so on and so forth fought in to fight for their lives and to claim themselves as the “greatest.” In the midst of jabs and hooks, and crosses and uppercuts, they both find themselves, whether consciously or unconsciously, figuring out who they are in relation to higher power.

Performed by rajiv awasthi and Danté Crichlow
Written and Directed by Marissa Joyce Stamps

Blue Fire Burns the Hottest steps into boxing, a sport whose goal is to consciously keep on returning to the ring to inflict pain on another and to constantly study that person all to explore the intersection of hypermasculinity and spirituality, especially for men of color.

Lauded as “a cutting edge…boundary-pushing festival” by CBS New York, “[The Exponential Festival] is where you go to see things in [their] purest and most inventive state.” (WNYC) “[Exponential] has curated a slate of emerging experimental performers who blur and complicate the boundaries of theater, comedy, visual art, and dance.” (Brooklyn Rail) Since 2016, Exponential has presented the work of 1,200 NYC-based artists to 17,300 audience members in 23 (primarily Brooklyn) venues. Our artists present multi-week runs, one-offs, and variety shows throughout the month of January in theaters, back rooms, basements, and box-stores—making “The Exponential [Festival] as big as Brooklyn itself.” (American Theatre Magazine)
