Year after year, hooligans in Holland came together to build a bigger bonfire than their rivals — their neighbors and the world.

A New Year’s tradition of burning Christmas trees evolved, over many years, into record-breaking stacks of pallets. This notorious event, with gabber techno blasting throughout its process, almost burned down the old town of Scheveningen and is now banned. Weaving through the sights and sounds, this film take a fly-on-the-wall perspective of the site of Scheveningen’s tower. This no-budget, unreleased film complements a photo project by the filmmaker.

The film premiered at Eindhoven Film Festival 2019 and Full Frame Documentary Film Festival 2020.

Romke Hoogwaerts is a Dutch-American artist and producer based in Brooklyn.
