Greensboro\, North Carolina. Members of the KKK and American Nazi Party opened fire on labor organizers preparing for a demonstration and educational conference organized by the Communist Workers Party (CWP). Five labor organizers were killed in what is now known as the Greensboro Massacre. Sally Alvarez\, a survivor\, documents the tragedy\, and the complicity of the local police and federal government in her film Red November\, Black November. \nThis screening is in conjunction with Soho Rep and their musical production The Potluck by César Alvarez\, a new musical featuring a 12 person intergenerational cast that conjures the soft side of the revolution\, and tells a story about what to do when the government is actually trying to kill you. \nThe show is playing June 30-August 2\, 2026\, at Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Playwrights Horizons (416 W 42nd St). \nSally Alvarez was born in Greensboro\, NC\, and grew up in Georgia. She has lived in the South for most of her life. After producing a number of documentary films on civil rights\, labor rights\, and social justice topics\, she worked for 20 years as a labor educator for Cornell’s School of Industrial Relations in New York\, where she also taught Southern labor history. She retired in 2019. She lives in Yonkers with her husband\, Joe. \nCésar Alvarez (they/them) is a composer\, lyricist\, playwright\, and performance maker. They create big experimental gatherings disguised as musicals in the key of inter-dimensionality\, socio-political transformation\, kinship and coexistence. With a background as a jazz saxophonist\, band leader and sound artist\, César’s work inhabits a space between the worlds of theater\, music\, performance art and social practice. César has written seven full-length musicals\, FUTURITY (Soho Rep/Ars Nova. 2016 Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical); The Elementary Spacetime Show; The Universe is a Small Hat; NOISE (a commission of The Public Theater); egg; The Potluck; and Painting Mary. At Soho Rep César composed the music for Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ An Octoroon (Drama Desk Nomination)\, and Washeteria. César was a 2018-20 Princeton Arts Fellow\, 2020-22 Hermitage Fellow\, a recipient of The Jonathan Larson Award in 2016\, The Guggenheim Fellowship and the Kleban Prize in Musical Theatre for Lyrics in 2022.
