An Evening with (work-in-progress) by Alex Franz Zehetbauer

In “An Evening with”, singer and sonic choreographer Alex Franz Zehetbauer inhabits the intimate concert classic: a vocalist and a piano. The audience is invited for an evening that playfully uses the tradition of the song as a means of punctuating the gathering of people. Melodies and lyrics mold an ever-shifting mood and atmosphere in the room. The ritual of the song is celebrated as a force for coming together, to resonate, to mourn, as a call to protest, to tell stories, and to manifest alternative futures.

At the moment, Alex Franz Zehetbauer is working on the project “”An Evening with””, which researches the tradition of the song as a means of punctuating the gathering of people – the song as a carrier bag – the ritual of the song as a force for coming together, to mourn, to resonate, as a call to protest, to tell stories, and to manifest alternative futures.

Alex is curious to investigate the cultural impact of songs themselves: from ancient creation myths where it’s said that a song brought the universe into existence to revolutions incited by the people going out into the streets to sing banned songs to the rapid production of pop “hits” and their homogenous forms. He will also explore the context of the intimate concert format: An Evening with _______. His intent is to strange and queer this format and to play with one of its classic set ups of a singer and a piano.
