SUMMARY:Only Place I Belong in Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Brick presents\nOnly Place I Belong in Concert\nby Can Yasar\nOctober 3\, 4\, 5 8pm \nMusical numbers paired with stories of love\, identity\, and belonging from the life of a foreigner searching for a home\, following his dreams in New York City. In a rebellious attempt to offer one’s truest self to the world\, a family\, and a mother\, we search for freedom and love in unexpected places. But we soon discover that at the end of every journey\, we’re suddenly standing in the middle of the next. \nBand:\nBrian Cudina (Drums)\nCan Yasar (Guitar)\nCraig Long (Piano)\nDave Alderman (Bass/Guitar)\nDaniel Shevlin (Cello) \nOnly Place I Belong is the journey of a young Turkish-immigrant man in search of love\, identity\, and belonging in America for the first time. The story follows Can (pronounced “John”) through a rebellious attempt to offer his truest self to the world\, his family\, and to himself. As Can moves from Turkey to New York\, we follow his heartbreaking\, sexy\, and unforgettable encounters\, as he finds the soul he thought he lost – his voice and music. With a score of original indie/folk songs blended with unmistakably-New York stories\, this new musical feels like a late-night train ride that you won’t want to end. \nM. CAN YASAR (writer\, composer) is an actor\, playwright\, and songwriter from Ankara\, Turkey. As a solo performer his plays include Smoke Point (Interrobang!? New Works Festival\, The Brick Theater) as a part of\, A Hundred Dollar Bill (United Solo Show Festival\, Theatre Row) which won the Best Autobiographical Show award\, and A Hundred Dollar Bill (New Works Series at TADA Theatre). Most recently he debuted some of his original music at Don’t Tell Mama directed by Lennie Watts. He created Only Place I Belong\, a new queer folk musical at The Tank. \nIn consideration for the health and safety or our staff members\, artists\, and audiences\, The Brick remains committed to maintaining vaccination requirements and mask mandates for our in-person presentations for the foreseeable future. We ask that all audience members remain masked. All staff and performers will be vaccinated; performers may not be masked. Audience can provide proof of vaccination with a government issued I.D. along with a physical copy or picture of your COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card\, the NYC COVID Safe App or the New York State Excelsior Pass. Please be patient with staff.
