Watch this former downtown experimental New York theatre scene (RIP) mainstay— that Time Out New York once described as “immensely likeable”—step into and “stand up” inside a new medium. Bent\, who now lives an anonymous life in an American province\, knows first-hand that comedy is tragedy plus time. \n\n\n\nDirected by Jess Barbagallo\n\nPenguin in Your Ear\, directed by the legendary Jess Barbagallo (who is no stranger to lukewarm descriptors)\, will feature Bent’s classic stew of jokes\, puns\, uncanny accents. Philosophical stories\, plus anecdotes that go absolutely nowhere\, about new chapters\, academia\, relationship status\, family\, IBS\, and America’s favorite narrative: Second acts. This new intrepid work lasts a mere 45 minutes because Bent believes “brevity is the Sol Lewitt.”  Audiences will cringe\, chuckle\, and squirm when they aren’t audibly laughing\, “lol-ing\,” and clamoring for more. As the love\nchild between Lily Tomlin\, Pee Wee Herman\, and Mr. Peanut Bent’s Bentertainments\ninclude solo-ish works (Karen\, I Said\, Toilet Fire and Aloha\, Aloha\, or When I Was\nQueen)\, plays (Indeed\, friend!\, On a Clear Day I Can See to Elba\, The Hotel Colors)\,\nadaptations (The Beyonce\, She of the Voice)\, and hybrid affairs (Bonnie’s Last Flight\, Real\nTalk / Kip Talk\, Blue Wizard / Black Wizard\, Pen Pals Meet). Bent’s shows have been\ndeveloped\, workshopped\, commissioned\, and produced at Abrons Arts Center\, the New\nOhio\, the Atlantic Theatre\, the Bushwick Starr\, the Exponential Festival\, and New York\nTheatre Workshop’s Next Door Series. Residencies: MacDowell\, LMCC’s Workspace\,\nSPACE on Ryder Farm\, New Georges\, Target Margin Institute Fellow\, Casa Zia Lina\,\nBerkeley Repertory Theatre’s Ground Floor\, Beach64\, and Pilot Balloon. Bent is currently a lecturer in the Radio TV\n& Film department at Northwestern University.\nBentertainment:\nBentertainment creates performance texts and media that tends toward narrative\,\ndramatic\, and linguistic structures that are indeed “bent” “different from normal;\nstrongly inclined; changed from an originally straight condition.” Bentertainments take\nmany shapes: as plays\, solo shows\, adaptations\, hybrid works\, experiential immersions\, \nZoom theatricals\, and most recently stand-up. Bentertainments are seriously silly and\nphilosophically inclined\, they explore the edges of appropriateness and are best\nexperienced in a state of ecstatic liveness. \nJess Barbagallo (director)\nJess Barbagallo is a theater artist\, teacher\, and writer.
