The Weelaunee People Park, an 85 acre forest in the middle of the city of Atlanta, is under threat of being demolished by the Atlanta Police Foundation and turned into a mock city for police to practice urban warfare against people of color. This would be the largest police training facility in the country, used by police departments all over the world to further militarize their police. There are a diversity of tactics being used to resist this develpment, including activists staying in the area 24/7 and using their bodies to defend the forest. Recently a forest defender named Tortuguita was tragically killed by police, the first environmental activist to be murdered by cops in the United States. We will be raising money that will go to support people who are on the ground, raising resources for them to continue putting themselves on the line to resist this project that will affect us all.
The 19th-28th of Feb is solidarity week for the Atlanta Forest Defenders. Join us for Dream of Trees at Brick Aux for live music and open mic featuring, stonergrrrl_420, Duen, Moishe, Barnett Cohen, altoscliff, Blaze, Allium, Christ!, and more! With hosts Nola, Cliff, and Amanda. There will also be zines, patches, letter writing and seed distribution.
Drinks and snacks available for donation.
