Paintings and drawings made during the last year exploring the topics of friendship, honesty, rage, race, identity politics, silence and complicity. Also… jokes!
At a time where culture and art in NY is dying, capitalism reigns supreme, and identity has become capital. Avoiding the market and attempting to survive in one of the richest cities in the world is no easy feat. Ramirez has struggled with the question: “What does it mean to be an artist?” And more specifically “Can you be an artist that was raised on welfare, or is it a path made just for the wealthy?”. After 14 years in New York struggling with this question, pursuing all forms of art making; comedy, performance, acting, music, Ramirez Depicts their intense inner world questioning through paintings and drawings made during the last year exploring the topics of friendship, honesty, rage, race, identity politics, silence and complicity through humorous imagery.

River L. Ramirez (they/them) is a NYC based experimental artist, comedian, musician, storyteller and writer who wrote, produced and directed the comedy special program “Pervert Everything” for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Ramirez currently appears alongside Fred Armisen on HBO’s Los Espookys, and does character voice over work for Adult Swim’s BIRDGIRL, and Teenage Euthanasia.
Ramirez’s performance practice extends beyond the limits of television and comedy, their live performance practice being integral to their art. They have recently been commissioned for original musical and dance based performances by Baryshnikov Arts Center, Gibney, Ars Nova Vision Residency program, and Moma PS1. This year they will be debuting their latest music/storytelling, experimental comedy show “GHOSTFOLK” at the Wiesbaden Biennale in Germany. They have written for High Maintenance and The National Lampoon Radio Hour. Named one of Comedy Central’s Up Next Comedians for 2018, Ramirez was featured in the San Francisco ClusterFest comedy festival, and performed at the Public Theater in New York as part of the January, 2019, Under the Radar Festival.
