Calx Vida Studio’s latest installation show, Social Sculpture, is a new work comprised of ephemera from the duo’s most recent social sculptures. The artists’ practice can be framed as a response to controversial artist Joseph Beuys’ assertion that “the concept of sculpting can be extended to the invisible materials used by everyone.” Calx Vida’s newest work is a series of mixed-media assemblages that evoke the complexity of a spa community’s social interactions. The show invites viewers to conceive of social processes as both an art form and a way to experiment with our social life.

Calx Vida Studio, a collaboration between Stephanie Beattie and Michael Glen, explores how social processes develop and evolve through written scripts, design choices, and user input. Works on display include the contents of a lost-and-found box, documentation of the referral network used for spa reservations, and select performances of a song cycle centered on transformation.

The opening and closing events will feature an immersive participatory installation and presentation/discussions of social sculpture as it relates to critical design, social theory, and conceptual art.

Calx Vida is Stephanie Beattie and Michael Glen
