Denis the Pirate (2015) dir. Sam Messer

A man tells the story of his great-great-great-great grandfather, Denis the Pirate, and his sidekick monkey, Babe Ruth, with whom he terrorized the Caribbean islands.

Written by Denis Johnson
Direction and Animation by Sam Messer
Narration by Liev Schreiber
Music by Sarah Neufeld and Colin Stetson
Edited by Russell Yaffe

“I wrote this story for my goddaughter Josephine Messer many years ago, while we were visiting the island of Bequia in the country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. She was about five at the time, and I hoped the misadventures of my great great-great-great-grandfather would amuse her. I changed the location to match our surroundings, but in every other respect the details of my ancestor’s unsavory career are absolutely accurate.” – Denis Johnson 2003.

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965) dir. Sergei Parajanov

Considered to be the most internationally heralded Ukrainian film in history, and a classic of Ukrainian magical realist cinema. Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is a “Romeo & Juliet tale of young Ukrainian lovers trapped on opposite sides of a Carpathian family blood feud. A stylistic masterpiece and a milestone in Ukrainian cinema!” – Allmovie.com

Serving two special Two Boots pizzas for the occasion!

President Z – with kielbasa from famed East Village butcher J. Baczynsky
The Lesya – a vegan borscht pie, in collaboration with Veselka, honoring iconic Ukrainian poet, playwright & political activist Lesya Ukrainka.

More on Razom and their response to the Humanitarian crisis in Ukraine:

“Emergency Response is the SOS button that is pressed in times of need. We created this project to provide urgent help and support in face of an extreme and unforeseen situation in Ukraine. Today, the sovereign nation of Ukraine has to deal with the most horrendous and catastrophic emergency – a brutal invasion. Razom is responding to this by providing critical medical supplies and amplifying the voices of Ukrainians.

The current emergency response is focused on purchasing medical supplies for critical situations like blood loss and other tactical medicine items. We have a large procurement team of volunteers that tracks down and purchases supplies and a logistics team that then gets them to Ukraine. Through multiple meetings a day, we are coordinating with several partner organizations worldwide, including Nova Ukraine, United Help Ukraine, Revived Soldiers Ukraine, Sunflower for Peace, and Euromaidan-Warszava. We are also working with governments and embassies on humanitarian corridors.”

In consideration for the health and safety or our staff members, artists, and audiences, The Brick remains committed to maintaining vaccination requirements and mask mandates for our in-person presentations for the foreseeable future. We ask that all audience members remain masked. All staff and performers will be vaccinated; performers may not be masked. Audience can provide proof of vaccination with a government issued I.D. along with a physical copy or picture of your COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card, the NYC COVID Safe App or the New York State Excelsior Pass. Please be patient with staff.
