saza/punishment/ by ankita – April 16 & 17
saza/punishment/ entangles Hindu goddess Kali’s ultimate power and destructive nature with present-day authoritarianism and religious violence, using myth to unpack how Hinduism has been shaped into propaganda for nationalism by Western influence. Tracing Kali’s deification, saza accompanies her transformation into a colonized, fetishized, destructive image that upholds violence with her bloodied tongue. As she comes down from idolatry, Kali and her disciple engage in a dance of punishing forgiveness and forgiving punishment.

Let’s go underground. Let’s crawl through the dark. Let’s feel the weight of the earth above us. Let’s dance with a bat. Tunnels, caves and cisterns? We got ’em.

Sweetblood by Camille Simone Thomas – April 16 & 18
Today I’m presenting music from my play in progress Sweetblood
Sweetblood follows three free Jamaican Maroon women in 1727 as they struggle to thrive in a world that will soon endure hundreds of years of chattel slavery due to the emerging sugar revolution. As the British forces approach relentlessly they must decide what they are willing to do to survive the encroaching invasion of their land, how far they are willing to go to fight against the disease of colonialism, and what it really means to be a revolutionary.
