Luvvie , aided by a mysterious Assistant , must come to terms with their compounding and confounding memories while navigating visiting voices who question , comfort , oppress , and delight in their every move. Does a voice in the darkness reflect light or echo in the void ?
Starring Elinor T Vanderburg and Drew Vanderburg (underlords, BLOODSHOT, The Human Incubator) and featuring downtown theater legend Richard Foreman (Ontological-Hysteric Theatre), acclaimed film director Mary Harron (American Psycho, I Shot Andy Warhol, Charlie Says), Alessandro Magania (You Are Under Our Space Control), Fulya Peker (Automatic Writing), and Cristina Pitter (Behind the Sheet , decolonizing my vagina), Periscope is a dark comedy about memory, isolation, and laughing so hard you could just cry.
Ryan William Downey ( Playwright) is an actor, playwright, and musician who serves as Associate Artistic Director of The Brick Theater and Co-Director of Title:Point, an experimental theater company that has been producing and presenting work in New York City for more than a decade, a curator and producer for Exponential Festival, and co-founder of Vital Joint. His most recent play, Sleeping Car Porters, was a New York Times Critic’s Pick and Biter (Every Time I Turn Around) , which he co-wrote, was one of Helen Shaw’s 10 Best Plays of 2015. He has also written Persistent Dream Body, The Assassination of Julius Caesar and co-written Post:Death, Never Odd or Even, Everything of Any Value, and SPACEtruck. He has performed at The Whitney Museum of American Art, La Mama, Incubator Arts Project, Dixon Place, The Brick, Invisible Dog, AS220, Silent Barn, the Gowanus River (in Jeff Stark’s The Dreary Coast) and many more venues in NYC and beyond . As a voice actor he has been heard on podcasts, audiobooks, in many plays and, most notably, on Pokémon film and television series playing a variety of characters.
Kara Feely ( co-Director) is a writer, director and designer for theater and interdisciplinary performance, and co-founder of Object Collection. Her work draws inspiration from experimental writing and music composition strategies, and combines a variety of materials, from found text fragments and landscapes of objects, to recorded interviews and radio broadcasts. Her projects for Object Collection include: It’s All True, Borealis Festival/La MaMa, cheap&easy OCTOBER, La MaMa, No Hotel, Incubator Arts/St. Mark’s Church, New York Girls, SPOR Festival/Roulette, ACTUA 1, Invisible Dog Arts Center, Innova, Abrons Arts Center, and Problem Radical(s), PS122.
Theresa Buchheister (co- Director) is the Artistic Director of The Brick theater in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and is a co-founder and artistic director of Title:Point , an experimental theatre company in New York since 2006. Title:Point has presented work at The Ontological/Incubator Arts, Dixon Place, The Brick, Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, Cloud City, The Silent Barn, The Glove, Hell Phone, Basement Bar, CATCH at Invisible Dog and The Knockdown Center, Little Theatre, Legion, K&M Bar, Frank’s North Star Tavern, AS220, in the back of 16-ft trucks, Gravesend Recording Studio, and has had residencies with HB Studio, NACL, Incubator Arts, and Pilot Balloon. Title:Point runs Vital Joint, an underground venue in East Williamsburg. Theresa also created and co-curates a live performance festival in January, The Exponential Festival , which presents theater, dance, performance art, and music across many venues, including JACK, The Brick, Bushwick Starr, Vital Joint, The Glove, Chez Bushwick, Triskelion Arts, Loading Dock and more. Theresa primarily directs, but also curates, produces, writes, performs and designs.
Travis Just ( Sound Designer ) is a composer based in Brooklyn, NY. His work often uses text, objects, and gesture in addition to instruments, voice, and electronics. He has composed six operas: Problem Radical(s) (2009), Innova (2011) and NO HOTEL (2013), cheap&easy OCTOBER (2015), It’s All True (2016), and You Are Under Our Space Control (2019).
Elinor T Vanderburg ( Luvvie ) is a African-American writer, performer, designer, and voice-over artist born in Washington, D.C. Recent credits include: BLOODSHOT (Dir. Sanaz Ghajar, Exponential Festival/Target Margin Theater 2020); Dancing Girl (Dir. Jenny Beth Snyder, SheNYC 2019); Water, Water, Everywhere… (Dirs. Tara Elliot and Tess Howsam, Exquisite Corpse Company); The Human Incubator (Dir. Martina Bonolis, SheNYC 2017). Elinor is a Co-Creative Director with Fresh Ground Pepper, a writer-in-residence with Exquisite Corpse Company, the Art Director of SheNYC, and one half of the illusory theater company, underlords, alongside her partner, Drew. Drew Vanderburg ( Assistant ) is an artist and urbanist in the global campaign for social justice + human rights. He has operated in the NYC theater scene since he fell wildly in love with Elinor in playwriting class. Fave credits: The Human Incubator (SheNYC), All the Rats and Rags (Joe’s Pub), The Libertine (Bedlam), Desire Caught By the Tail (Guggenheim), Ideal (FGP/59E59), BASH (Exit Art), MAN=CARROT Circus (Bread & Puppet). Drew is the founder of the New York City Street Players and is one-half of underlords, a theater collective that writes plays for and about misfits. / @thepoemroom
Richard Foreman ( Gideon ) is a major figure in the avant-garde theater. Founder and director of the Ontological-Hysteric Theater, for which he has written, directed and designed over fifty major productions in New York and Europe during his career. Five of his plays have received “OBIE” awards as best play of the year—and he has received five other “OBIES” for directing and for ‘sustained achievement’. He has received the annual Literature award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, a “Lifetime Achievement in the Theater” award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the PEN Club Master American Dramatist Award, a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, and in 2004 was elected officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of France. His archives and work materials have recently been acquired by the Bobst Library at NYU.
Mary Harron ( Elijah) was a rock journalist in the punk rock era and then worked in British television before making her first feature film, I Shot Andy Warhol , in 1996. She also wrote and directed the films American Psycho , The Notorious Bettie Page , The Moth Diaries , and Charlie Says . For television, Mary has directed episodes of television series including Oz, The L Word, Six Feet Under, Big Love, and The Following, and directed the Lifetime movie Anna Nicole. Her most recent project, the Quibi series The Expecting, will be released later this year.
Alessandro Magania ( Ianthe ) is a performing artist working in theatre, dance, and film. He has appeared in works by, among others, Object Collection, The Million Underscores, The Wooster Group, Eliza Bent, Sibyl Kempson, Tereke Ortiz, Roman Ondak, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Peter, Petralia, Alison Folland, Zbignew Bzymk, and Viva Ruiz. His piece Radio Delirio has been shown atThe Performing Garage (NYC), and Prelude Festival (NYC). Recent film and TV: the movie Autotrophia by artist Anton Vidokle, and the Netfix series Living With Yourself . He has created video works shown on online platforms such as Visionaire, Arforum, Nowness, and Amazon Prime, as well as festivals Mlano Mix and Rockaway Film Festival. Fulya Peker ( Althea ) is a New York and Istanbul based theater artist. She has performed in Richard Foreman’s Deep Trance Behavior in Potatoland and Astronome: A Night at the Opera in collaboration with John Zorn, Object Collection’s Geometry , Innova , No Hotel , Cheap&Easy October, You Are Under Our Space Control, Robert Ashley’s Automatic Writing, David Michalek’s Portraits in Dramatic Time at Lincoln Center, as well as some butoh performances. Her international credits as a writer/director include Requiem Aeternam Deo , The Void , The Plague , The Red Book , Dem , Blind!(s) , Maldoror . Peker is the founder/artistic director of Katharsis Performance Project. Currently she teaches at İstanbul Bilgi University.
Cristina Pitter ( Isadora) is a queer afro-latina fat babe artist who wants to burn it down and plant new seeds in the fertile soil comprised of the ashes of her oppressors . Founder of The Ashe Collective – an ancestral storytelling and community outreach group, Community Director and company member of Pipeline Theatre Company, company member of Ensemble Studio Theatre. She also has the best laugh ever. SERIOUSLY.
