Welcome to the PalinDome is a series of conversations where we look backwards and forwards with artists who have been creating, facilitating, mutating and pulsating for at least 20 years. Where did they start? What have they witnessed? What wild stories need to be told? How do they view various artistic landscapes and communities at present? What are they excited about for the future? What do they do differently now? This series is born of a deep belief that we have so much to learn from each other and we ought to carve out the time to listen. The first iteration of this project was held in the SoHo loft of Richard Foreman, as Patricia Ybarra facilitated questions and conversation spanning his 60+ years of writing, directing, designing and observing.
For this particular evening:
Our second PalinDome guest is Maria Striar, the founder and Artistic Director of Clubbed Thumb, a company that was founded in 1996 and has become known for recognizing and supporting exciting playwrights in a multitude of impactful ways. Theresa Buchheister will be asking her questions and letting her roll, as they have been a fan of Clubbed Thumb since arriving to NY in 2004.
Maria is a founder of and the Artistic Director of Clubbed Thumb and is a veteran performer and director. She teaches semi-regularly at Hunter College, and has been a guest artist, speaker, adjudicator or adjunct lecturer at Brown University, Fordham University, New York University, Yale University, University of California, San Diego, The O’Neill Theatre Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, UT Austin, University of Iowa, among others. She has a BA in theater arts (and history) from Brown University and MFA in acting from UCSD. Interviews with her can be found in The New York Times, HowlRound, New York Magazine, Women in Theatre and American Theater Magazine. She has been a reader for the Princess Grace Award, the Jerome Fellowship, the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab, a Nominator for the Kennedy prize, has served on funding panels for the NEA, DCA, NYSCA, the Whiting Award and ART/NY. She was honored with an inaugural Lilly Award for Artistic Direction citing her work as a “fierce champion of new works and new writers… who has helped launch and/or develop the careers” of scores of playwrights, especially women.
