Introducing Staff Picks, a new website that curates and recommends a list of plays, shows, and other performance pieces to see!
Live performance is inherently ephemeral, but some works have shorter runs than others. Staff Picks aims to publicize and uplift such works with shorter runs in varied venues that stretch artistic expression. Kind of an agora but also your theatergoing friend, Staff Picks will invite suggestions for shows to see from its users and also publish their mini reviews (nom nom nom) that give voice to shows that are less likely to be covered or spotlit.
Here’s to a fresh site giving love to fresh works ™️

Staff Picks emerged from several conversations circling around the bowl of going to shows, getting advice on shows, how we talk about shows, where shows are happening, how things have changed, are changing, will continue to change.
Then it smashed into the reality of Theresa Buchheister (Artistic Director of Title:Point, The Exponential Festival and The Brick) having worked at many bookstores (Drama Book Shop, The Strand, The Un-Oppressive Non-Imperialist Bargain Book Store, Housing Works, The Children’s Book Shop) and their love of writing and reading staff picks. They immediately went to Billy McEntee (playwright, producer, theater journalist for Brooklyn Rail and Greenpointers) and Laia Comas (Home for a Swarm of Bees, playwright, performer, director) to deep dive into whether this could be a THING.
The site won’t have reviews but pithy expressions of why you in particular want to see a certain show — and then maybe someone else’s response to it! Right now, the site is meant to be a super easy way to promote and encourage awareness/discourse, but the goal is to do a couple of parties per year that would cover the cost of the site ($220) and paying people for picks and responses.
