The Brick presents
Karaoke means Joy
by Allie Pinel
Feb 10 & 11, 2023
Karaoke means Joy is an immersive karaoke performance. This ego show looks into our performance dreams of ourselves versus reality and the unlikely friendships that form around the local gay karaoke bar.
Writer, Director, Choreographer: Alexandra Pinel
Video Production: Maksim Akselrod
Dramaturgy: Janine Cunningham
Collaborators: Sophie Bromberg, Mistah Coles, Susana Cook, Janine Cunningham, Lindsey Weaving and Kegan Zema.
Karaoke means Joy takes place in a gay karaoke bar just reopening after Covid and poses questions around adult friendships and our performance dreams for ourselves. This immersive performance introduces us to Andi and Mo friends and regulars of the bar for 7 years who still have a lot to find out about themselves through song, Chloe the bachelorette who discovered this place on TikTok, Roxy the aspiring singer and also regular VIP, Sam the bartender who just quit singing and DJ who is a budding politician- and karaoke DJ.
