Musical numbers paired with stories of love, identity, and belonging from the life of a foreigner searching for a home, following his dreams in New York City. In a rebellious attempt to offer one’s truest self to the world, a family, and a mother, we search for freedom and love in unexpected places. Only Place I Belong is the journey of a young Turkish-immigrant man in search of love, identity, and belonging in America for the first time. The story follows Can (pronounced “John”) through a rebellious attempt to offer his truest self to the world, his family, and to himself. As Can moves from Turkey to New York, we follow his heartbreaking, sexy, and unforgettable encounters, as he finds the soul he thought he lost – his voice and music. With a score of original indie/folk songs blended with unmistakably-New York stories, this new musical feels like a late-night train ride that you won’t want to end.

M. CAN YASAR (writer, composer) is an actor, playwright, and songwriter from Ankara, Turkey. As a solo performer his plays include Smoke Point (Interrobang!? New Works Festival, The Brick Theater) as a part of, A Hundred Dollar Bill (United Solo Show Festival, Theatre Row) which won the Best Autobiographical Show award, and A Hundred Dollar Bill (New Works Series at TADA Theatre). Most recently he debuted some of his original music at Don’t Tell Mama directed by Lennie Watts. He created Only Place I Belong, a new queer folk musical at The Tank.
